The Maughan Amplifier Company
The Maughan Amplifier Company was established in 2003 by Bernard and Vivienne Maughan.
A keen pianist, Bernard has maintained a life-long and passionate interest in music and sound reproduction. He designed and built his first valve amps back in the mid-60's when he was still at school and over the years has repaired and restored a wide range of both vintage and modern valve amps as favours for his many musician friends.
In the course of doing this, he became increasingly aware of the shortcomings of many modern amps and the growing rarity of original classics. In 2002, after unrelenting badgering by musicians who appreciated Bernard's intuitive understanding of their requirements, he was persuaded to consider designing his own range of valve amps.
Instead of just looking at and replicating the old amp designs of the 1950's and 60's, Bernard intensively researched wireless and electronics journals and texts from the 1920's up to and beyond WW2, re-discovering in the process a vast amount of 'lost' knowledge. Combining this with the latest CAD design and emulation technology, modern materials science and reliability engineering principles, he set about perfecting the Maughan amp. Musician friends were, in their turn, badgered into playing through, commenting on and offering informed suggestions about, the many prototypes which preceded the production model.
We would like to thank all who contributed their expertise, ideas, friendship and support to this project: their continuing involvement remains invaluable.
